GERD or known as gastro esophageal reflux disease is a kind of condition that is focused on the digestive systems of people. The chronic pain of the acid reflux is suffered by many people around the world. This condition is very widespread and it is a disease that is commonly incurred by the stomach contents reflux that reaches the esophagus. The disease is quite common among adults and even to infants and although it may not be life threatening but it can lead to more serious conditions if it is not treated properly or at the right time. Many people will experience a very mild case of acid reflux every once and awhile, and pregnant woman are also prone to this disorder.


The reason some people develop GERD is still unclear. However, research shows that in people with GERD, the LES relaxes while the rest of the esophagus is working. Anatomical abnormalities such as a hiatal hernia may also contribute to GERD. A hiatal hernia occurs when the upper part of the stomach and the LES move above the diaphragm, the muscle wall that separates the stomach from the chest. Normally, the diaphragm helps the LES keep acid from rising up into the esophagus. When a hiatal hernia is present, acid reflux can occur more easily. A hiatal hernia can occur in people of any age and is most often a normal finding in otherwise healthy people over age 50. Most of the time, a hiatal hernia produces no symptoms.

heartburn and acid reflux and GERD hear used interchangeably, but they are not the same. Heartburn or acid indigestion is a symptom, that is, it’s what you feel as a result of acid reflux. Acid reflux comes back from the acids and digestive juices into the esophagus rising because a valve, known as the LES does not close properly or remain closed.

Heartburn and reflux are common, and happens almost every occasion. They usually know why, if it did not happen. You just ate a really big meal greasy, spicy and fatty foods – and washed it with a few beers. You take a couple of Tums, the burning goes away -. This is not your ordinary life and heartburn and acid reflux is not a persistent problem

GERD, or gastroesophageal reflux disease is different in terms of their frequency and severity. GERD is acid reflux, that which is more than a few times a week, and happens more frequently. If left untreated, GERD can in some really serious health problems such as cancer of the esophagus.

GERD symptoms

Although heartburn and the resulting pain is the most typical symptom, you can have GERD without heartburn. Expect to develop a dry cough and constant cleaning of the through, respiratory problems, similar to asthma, and difficulty swallowing are all different symptoms of GERD. And note that most children under twelve years with this disease, no concomitant heartburn.

GERD causes

And in the case of a hiatal hernia, acid reflux can happen more easily, because the LES has over the area separates the stomach from the chest moves. For example, people who smoke, are overweight, pregnant or have a greater likelihood of GERD. And there is a list of foods that are known to increase the problems for people who have frequent symptoms will worsen – are foods such as these as a reflux trigger known foods: citrus fruits, caffeine and alcohol, excessively spicy foods, tomato-based foods and fried and fatty foods are among the worst.

Preventing the direct symptoms of acid reflux does not only mean watching and changing your diet. Of course avoiding spicy and highly acidic food is part of the cure for acid reflux and preventing heartburn, but so is adding more alkaline foods to your diet and eating smaller portions.
